Toolforging 102- Forging tongs

Toolmaking: Forge Your Own Blacksmith’s Tongs

Join us for a focused, hands-on day at the forge from 10am to 5pm, where you’ll make one of the most essential tools in any blacksmith’s workshop — your own pair of tongs.

This practical course will guide you step-by-step through the process of forging, shaping, and assembling working blacksmith’s tongs. If this is your first pair, we usually recommend starting with flat-bit tongs (pictured), but you’re welcome to tackle other styles such as:

  • Scrolling tongs

  • Hollow-bit tongs

  • Or more advanced designs (by prior discussion)

By the end of the day, most students complete a functional pair of tongs measuring approximately 300–400mm, ideal for general blacksmithing work.

If you’d prefer to make a smaller pair for jewellery work, just let us know in advance and we’ll prepare the appropriate stock for you.

Planning something more advanced? Get in touch beforehand and we’ll be happy to discuss whether it’s suitable for the course.
