FAQs

How do I book a course?
We offer two ways to book: public courses and private reservations.

To join a public course, simply visit our Public Courses page, select the course you’re interested in, and click the orange booking button. This will take you to CraftCourses, who securely manage all of our bookings.

If you’d prefer a private session, just get in touch with us by email or phone and we’ll be happy to arrange a date that works for you.

Yes, you keep all the things you make!

Do I need any prior experience?
No—our beginner courses are designed for complete newcomers, so no prior experience is needed at all.

For more advanced courses (such as axe forging or Damascus steel), some basic experience can be helpful, but it’s not always essential. If you’re unsure whether a course is right for your level, feel free to get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise.

Which course should I take?
Blacksmithing is a hands-on, physical craft—but if you’re comfortable lifting and using a 2lb hammer, you’ll be absolutely fine.

If you’re new to it, we recommend starting with either our Beginners Blacksmithing Course or our Beginners Copper Repoussé Course. These are a great introduction to working with metal and are a bit gentler than more intensive options like axe or knife forging.

They’re the perfect place to build confidence, learn the basics, and see if the craft is for you.

I have a voucher to redeem – how do I use it?
How you redeem your voucher depends on the type you have.

For public course gift vouchers, these are purchased through CraftCourses and can be redeemed directly on their website when booking your chosen course.

If your voucher is for a private course (often listed as “date to be decided”), simply get in touch with us by email or phone and we’ll arrange your experience at a time that suits you.

I have a medical condition – can I still take part?
Blacksmithing is a practical, physically demanding activity, so some medical conditions may make it unsafe to participate.

For example, the work involves standing for long periods, using tools, working around heat, and following verbal safety instructions. Conditions that significantly affect mobility, balance, vision, hearing, or coordination may limit safe participation. This can include (but isn’t limited to) serious visual or hearing impairments, limited use of both hands, reliance on mobility aids, or conditions such as severe epilepsy, uncontrolled asthma, or certain heart conditions. We also  advise against participating during pregnancy due to the sub-sonic vibrations which may affect your child.

That said, every situation is different. If you’re unsure, please get in touch before booking—we’re always happy to discuss your circumstances and, where possible, see if we can make adjustments to help you take part safely.

What do I need to wear?
For safety and comfort, it’s important to wear suitable clothing when working at the forge.

We’ve put together a full guide covering everything you’ll need—from footwear to fabrics—so please take a moment to read it before your course:

What do I need to bring?
Just a few simple things to make your day run smoothly:

  • Sensible clothing and sturdy footwear suitable for workshop conditions
  • A backpack or bag to safely take your finished work home
  • A packed lunch (you’ll definitely have earned it!)

We’ll provide all the tools, materials, and safety equipment you’ll need on the day.

Do I need to verify my age?
Yes—our courses have age restrictions, and we may ask for ID to ensure everyone’s safety.

Our beginners’ courses are open to ages 13 and above. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the full duration of the day.

For courses involving the forging of sharp or potentially dangerous items (such as knives or axes), participants must be 18 or over.

If you look under 25, we may ask to see a valid form of ID on arrival. Unfortunately, this is necessary due to previous instances of incorrect ages being given at booking.

If you’re unable to provide ID when requested, you won’t be able to take part in the course, and refunds will not be issued.

What time does my course start and end?
Your exact start and finish times will be listed on your course booking.

As a general guide, most of our courses run from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Occasionally, sessions may run slightly over, so we recommend allowing a bit of extra time at the end of the day just in case.

I’m taking public transport – how do I get to the forge?
The forge is located at the north end of Blyth and is accessible by both bus and train.

If you’re travelling from Newcastle, the X11 bus (along with several other routes) stops very close to the forge. You can plan your journey and check routes here:

Alternatively, the Blyth Bebside railway station is the nearest train station on the Northumberland Line, around a 15–20 minute walk from the forge.

If you’re attending a course where you’ll be making sharp or potentially dangerous items, please make sure to bring a backpack or suitable bag to carry your work home safely.

Do you recommend any local places to stay?
Yes—there are several great options nearby that previous customers have enjoyed.

The Commissioners Quay Inn is around a 10-minute drive away and offers both accommodation and good food. It’s a popular choice with our guests.

A little further out (about 20 minutes), The Snowy Owl is another well-reviewed option.

You’ll also find a Holiday Inn Newcastle - Gosforth Park nearby, along with a range of B&Bs in Bedlington and Blyth—all within easy reach of the forge.

How many people are on each course?
Our public courses are kept small, with a maximum of 4–6 participants depending on the course.

This ensures plenty of one-to-one guidance and a more hands-on, personal experience for everyone.

Will I be working on my own or sharing equipment?
A mix of both. Some equipment is shared, while other tools are allocated individually, depending on the course and group size.

Each participant will typically have their own anvil to work at. Equipment such as forges, grinders, and polishing machines are shared, with guidance to ensure everyone gets plenty of time using them.

If you would prefer to have the equipment all to yourself please consider a private reservation.

Is there parking available?
Yes—there is plenty of on-street parking available around the business park.

We just ask that you’re mindful of neighbouring businesses and avoid blocking access or entrances.

Are there toilets and facilities on site?

Yes—we have toilet facilities available on site, including one wheelchair-accessible toilet.

Can I bring food, or are there places nearby to eat?
You’re welcome to bring a packed lunch, and we recommend doing so to make the most of your day.

If you’d prefer to buy food, there are several options nearby, including Greggs and McDonald's, both just a couple of minutes’ walk away.

What is your cancellation or rescheduling policy?
For public courses, cancellation and rescheduling policies can vary, so we recommend checking the specific course listing before booking.

For private bookings, we ask for at least 3 days’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange. These bookings are generally more flexible, and we’ll always do our best to accommodate changes where possible.

What happens if I can’t attend?
For public courses, if you or the intended participant can no longer attend and it’s too late to cancel (please check your booking policy), you have a couple of options.

You’re welcome to send someone else in your place, or we can try to re-advertise your space. If we’re able to fill it, we’ll provide you with a refund.

Can I change the name on a booking or voucher?

Yes—names can be changed if needed. Just get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to update the details for you.

Can you cater for groups or team days?
Yes—we regularly run private courses for groups, including team days, celebrations, and special occasions.

For more information, please visit our Private Courses page, or get in touch with us to discuss your requirements—we’ll be happy to help plan something that suits your group.

Is this suitable for couples or two people booking together?
Yes—our courses are a great experience to share.

You’re welcome to book onto a public course together, or for a more personal experience, take a look at our Private Courses page.

Will I get dirty?
A little, yes! Blacksmithing is a hands-on craft, and you can expect to get a bit warm, a bit sweaty, and maybe a little sooty.

As long as you wear old clothes you don’t mind getting a bit mucky, you’ll be absolutely fine. We also provide everyone with a leather apron to help keep you protected.

Can I take photos or videos?
Yes—you're very welcome to take photos and videos during your course.

We’ll also usually take a few photos on the day and share them with you afterwards, so you’ll have something to remember your experience.

Do you sell any of the items you make?
Yes—we have a small shop upstairs where you can browse and purchase our work.

You’re welcome to take a look during lunch or at the end of the day.
