Forging Arrowheads
Arrowsmithing: Forge Your Own Arrowheads
Step into the world of medieval arrowsmithing and learn how to forge your own historically inspired arrowheads.
In this focused one-day course (10am–5pm), you’ll explore a range of traditional patterns, beginning with bodkins and broadheads before progressing to more specialised forms such as yoke heads, rope cutters, trefoils, barbed heads, swallowtails, and basket heads.
Arrowheads are deceptively challenging — they must be forged to precise size and weight to perform correctly, yet remain strong enough to withstand use. Because of this fine, detailed work, the number of heads you complete will depend on your experience level and pace on the day.
This course is not aimed at complete beginners. Confident beginners are welcome, but should expect a technical and fiddly challenge.
If participants wish to only forge a single style of head, focusing on mastering the style in order to equip themselves with a full display set they are most welcome to do this too. This course is most often booked by historical connoisseurs wishing to replicate specific medieval finds to use as a educational display pieces. Previously, we have hosted this course including a swage and mandrel, tools used to forge the sockets on heads. If you would prefer to forge fewer heads and cover the tools used to make arrowheads instead, please let us know!
